Overview

Starting her career as the only lady doctor in a provincial general practice, Lucy never expected to fall in love with her partner's wife, Ruth. In 1990, lesbians are virtually unheard of in this small Yorkshire town, and certainly not accepted in polite society. The shock waves from their affair reverberate far into the future, changing lives forever.

Meanwhile, the practice is grappling with Mrs Thatcher's modernisation of the UK family health services. Pioneering computer systems, business plans and a new surgery building are placing intolerable strains on the doctors. Something will have to give.

Facing prejudice, injustice, and betrayal, Lucy struggles to carve out her identity as a gay doctor in a world that isn't quite ready for her kind.

Lucy's story is typical of the lived experience of many "queer" professionals at a time when the terror of being "outed" was very real. It wasn't that long ago.
