In the 1960s Midwest, Barbara Wilson is an enthusiastic music director at her Catholic Church on Eastern Michigan University’s campus. In addition to her religious teachings, both her parents reinforced the importance of honesty and integrity above all else. When she reports a close friend suspected of lesbianism, the girl is expelled and Barbara feels conflicted.
Two decades later on California’s Central Coast, Barbara is the beloved “Miss Wilson” of a special education classroom. Then her neighbor, an unapologetic lesbian, challenges every rule Barbara once preached. Years later, Barbara falls in love with Sandra, a fellow teacher and married mother of three.
On a moonlit night, with the moon eclipsing, a fearful Barbara confesses to Sandra that she is gay. Sandra whispers, “I don’t know if I’m gay-I just know I love you.” Their clandestine romance must survive small town gossip, religious convictions, family rejection, and the very real threat of losing their jobs.
Even though their love for their grandchildren is equal, the family calls Sandra Nana and Barbara by the name everyone calls her. She can’t be Nana Barbs for fear it would cause people to wonder if they are two moms.
Part love story, part spiritual reckoning, Through the Closet Door is an uplifting testament to the freedom that arrives when you refuse to call your love a sin.
