Death is not supposed to be the final goodbye for Violet when her wife, Jessica, dies and has her mind uploaded into ESTAR. Virtual reality will give them the rest of Violet’s mortal life together while playing in their choice of games: from dungeon crawl and world exploration to puzzle solving or real-life simulations.

Jessica’s parents—the owners of ESTAR—prevent Violet from being able to say goodbye and block the couple from being able to contact one another through the game platform, however, not finding Violet a suitable heiress to their billion-dollar company. When they attempt to pay her to leave and have nothing further to do with the game or Jessica’s avatar, Violet turns around and uses the money on a black-market pod dealer who will upload her, but they can only give her one life.

If Violet dies in any of the game worlds within ESTAR while trying to reunite with Jessica, she will wake up in the mortal world, permanently separated from her wife. There will be no second chances at a happily ever after.

With the help of two AI tutorial guides and her chosen family, Violet embraces the one choice she’s willing to accept: level or live.
