Mary Kowalski is twenty-four, from Minnesota, and working as a dental receptionist in Greenville, South Carolina. She skates as an ice girl for the ECHL Swamp Rabbits because it's the closest she can get to the hockey she misses. She's dated boys, kissed girls at parties, and told herself the threesomes were for her boyfriend. She's starting to suspect that was a lie.

Elena "Lena" Castillo is twenty-six, a marketing coordinator who also works as an ice girl. She's a local with a Colombian mother and Upstate father, with tattoos she hides under cardigans at the office. She's been closeted since she was fifteen, since a kiss at church camp that she's spent eleven years trying to forget. When Lena joins the ice crew, the attraction is immediate—and terrifying. Neither woman has ever been in a relationship with another woman. Neither knows how to name what they want. But as the season progresses and they circle closer, they'll have to decide: Is love worth the risk of being seen?
