The story of Steven Grant Rogers and James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is one of intensity, love, friendship, and, ultimately, tragedy. Their story begins with tragedy, and tragedy is at its very core. What else would you call it when the man you sacrificed everything for dies in a war he didn't want to fight? When he comes back from the dead only to have forgotten you almost completely? When he tries to kill you, twice? When instead of returning to you, he chooses to retreat to something that had been forced on him for seventy years by his abusers? When you yourself travel backwards to an idealised past and leave him behind? ______________________________________________________________________ By the author - Fight The Good Fight analyses the relationships in the Captain America films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to explore their queer undertones and the ways these have shaped the characters in them, including Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, Peggy Carter, Sam Wilson, and Natasha Romanoff, as well as many others. Upon reflection, this book does not provide a complete picture of the ways in which being queer is a part of one's identity. Instead it focuses only on relationships, and Steve's relationships with the people in his life. It does not take into account his experiences that are not shaped by the other characters in the films, such as internal struggles, disabilities, and other factors such as gender and gender expression. If I were so inclined, I could write a whole other book exploring Steve's transness. As it stands, this is a snapshot into my thoughts at the time, and my reflections on a character I've loved since I was 22. I was 28 at the time of writing this in 2020, and I had spent a decade in various fandoms with little to show for it. Hopefully now I have contributed something of note.
